We want to provide six bursaries for talented young writers (18–35) and writers from BME backgrounds in Nottingham in 2012 to help them realise their creative potential and get to the next stage in their lives as writers.
What do writers get out of the bursaries?
The bursaries provide recipients with a year's membership of Nottingham Writers' Studio, mentoring sessions with established and professional writers, a free place on an intensive one-day workshop, and an opportunity to read their work or have it performed in front of a live audience.
Membership of NWS provides access to a vibrant community of writers at different levels of their careers across the spectrum of genres, from poetry, fiction and scriptwriting to journalism, non-fiction, and copywriting. We provide space for writers to work in away from the pressures of home, plenty of opportunities to meet other writers and share experiences at writing groups and socials, and creative and professional development opportunities through workshops, performance events, talks, and involvement in collaborative projects.
We ran our first bursary scheme in 2011, funded from our reserves, which was aimed at emerging writers facing barriers to accessing creative and professional development opportunities. This has been a success and we would like to repeat it in 2012, with a stronger focus on specific groups that have fewer opportunities to develop their writing—but we need your support to do it this time.
How did this year’s bursary recipients benefit?
"The NWS bursary has been wonderful for me. I really think it has given me a foothold as a writer and am very grateful for the confidence building and chance to meet so many amazing writers."
“Obtaining the NWS bursary allowed me opportunities I would never have had otherwise. I have received invaluable advice from professional authors, discussed my work in a relaxed setting with my peers and learned new skills and aspects of writing thanks to the various groups and services offered by the studio.”
“The NWS bursary gave me the chance to intermingle with other writers, to find a different direction to my novel, one which I have never even considered. It gave me the opportunity to perform my work in front of a crowd, and just winning the bursary helped to give me a new confidence in my work and encouragement to continue writing.”

Note
How it works:
- Order a reward by clicking on one of the reward images on the right hand side of the page. At this point you will authorise Culturelabel.com to deduct the funds relating to the reward you chose.
- If this project does not reach its funding goal in its funding period, your card will not be billed and your order will be cancelled.
- If the project is successful, your card will be billed and you will receive your reward.
Where possible, if the project reaches its funding goal you should receive your reward promptly after the end of the funding period. However, please be aware that owing to the nature of this project, those rewards associated with the artwork itself cannot be dispatched until the artwork is complete. This may take some time following the completion of the funding period. The arts organisation running the project will be responsible for speedy dispatch of your rewards as soon as they are available, and will keep you updated on the progress of the project and timetable for dispatch of your rewards. By ordering a reward through Culture Label this indicates that you have agreed to this longer timeframe for dispatch of those rewards directly associated with an event or new artistic product. Reward images are illustrative. The rewards may look substantially different to the representations on WeDidThis.
